How to set correct GMT Offset!

February 14, 2017

Most of the forex robots (expert advisors) have some time restrictions in their trading strategies (algorithms). This is required because the foreign exchange markets around the world open and close at different time. Of course, this has impact on the market prices, volatility of the market, trading volume and so on - factors which are very important for one profitable trading strategy. For example some trading strategies start trading during the Asian session other during European session. Others may stop trading during these sessions. All depends on the trading techniques integrated in the forex robots.

What is GMT offset?

Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) called also Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) is used as the official world reference for time. You will often see time zones represented similar to UTC - 3h or GMT - 3h. In this example the (-3h) refers to that time zone being three hours behind UTC or GMT. UTC+3h or GMT +3h would refer to that time zone being three hours ahead of UTC of GMT. The difference in time between our local time and GMT (UTC) is called GMT offset.

Why the GMT offset is very important?

All brokerage companies are located in different countries with their own GMT offsets. Therefore it is so important to set the correct GMT offset in the expert advisors settings. Otherwise the forex robots will not be able to detect the correct time when to start or stop trading.  Of course, this will affect their performances negatively.

What is DST?

Daylight saving time (DST) or summer time is the practice of advancing clocks during summer months by one hour so that evening daylight lasts an hour longer. Typically, regions with summer time adjust clocks forward one hour in the last week of March and adjust them backward in the last week of October to standard time.

Most of the forex brokers also change their GMT offsets during summer. Therefore it is also important to know that and set it correctly in the forex robots settings.

GMT offset in WallStreet 2.0 Evolution and WallStreet Recovery PRO Evo

Due to trading logic of these two forex robots they don't use any time restrictions. Therefore by default you don't need to make any changes related to the GMT offset. But if you want to enable and use the News filter integrated in these forex robots then you have to make sure that the settings for GMT offset are correct. Here are the settings related to the GMT offset:

AutoGMT_Offset - When this parameters value is TRUE then the robot will try to find the correct GMT offset of your broker automatically. But if the time zone of your computer is wrong then this automatic GMT offset detection system will fail and you have to set AutoGMT_Offset=FALSE and to use manual GMT offset. Read below for more information.

ManualGMT_Offset - This parameter value must be the  winter GMT offset  of your broker. We will repeat: the winter GMT offset! No matter whether your broker change its GMT offset during summer. If you are not sure what is the winter GMT offset of your broker you can ask. We are sure your broker will provide you this information.

DST_Usage - If your broker changes its GMT offset during summer and winter you must set TRUE for this parameter. If your broker always has the same GMT offset during the whole year then set - FALSE. This parameter is very important  and therefore make sure  that you set it correctly. In case that you are not sure ask your broker.

GMT offset in WallStreet ASIA Evo

WallStreet ASIA Evo is an Asian session scalper. It trades only during the Asian session. The time is very important for this forex robot. If the wrong GMT offset is set then the results could be unexpected. The GMT offset settings are similar as WallStreet 2.0 Evolution and WallStreet Recovery PRO Evo. But there are some differences and we strongly recommend you to read the instructions below:

Auto_GMT - When this parameters value is TRUE then the robot will try to find the correct GMT offset of your broker automatically. But if the time zone of your computer is wrong then this automatic GMT offset detection system will fail and you have to set Auto_GMT=FALSE and to use manual GMT offset. Read below for more information.

Manual_GMT_Offset - This parameter value must be the  winter GMT offset  of your broker. We will repeat: the winter GMT offset! No matter whether your broker changes its GMT offset during summer. If you are not sure what is the winter GMT offset of your broker you can ask. We are sure your broker will provide you this information.

IMPORTANT: in versions of WallStreet ASIA Evo below 1.2 you have to set in Manual_GMT_Offset parameter always the current GMT offset of your broker. If it is summer then you have to set summer GMT offset, if it is winter then you have to set the winter GMT offset of your broker. In version 1.2 we have changed this and you have to set always the winter GMT offset!

Calculate_DST - If your broker changes its GMT offset during summer and winter you must set TRUE for this parameter. If your broker always has one same GMT offset during the whole year then set FALSE. This parameter is very important  and therefore make sure  that you set it correctly. In case that you are not sure ask your broker.

We are aware that it is difficult to understand all about GMT offset and how to set it correctly. Therefore if you have any doubts then please contact us or comment below. We will be happy to help you with setting the correct GMT offset in our forex robots.

GMT offset in WallStreet GOLD Trader

WallStreet GOLD Trader is special version of WallStreet Forex Robot which is developed to trade on GOLD(XAUUSD). The time is really essential for this forex robot. If it uses the wrong GMT offset then the results may be unexpected. The GMT offset settins are the same as WallStreet Forex Robot. Please read below carefully, it is very important:

Auto_GMT - When this parameters value is TRUE then the robot will try to find the correct GMT offset of your broker automatically. But if the time zone of your computer is wrong then this automatic GMT offset detection system will fail and you have to set Auto_GMT=FALSE and to use manual GMT offset. Read below for more information.

ManualGMT_Offset - This parameter value must be the  winter GMT offset  of your broker. We will repeat: the winter GMT offset! No matter whether your broker changes its GMT offset during summer. If you are not sure what is the winter GMT offset of your broker you can ask. We are sure your broker will provide you this information.

In addition to the parameters above, it is always required to set Calculate_DST based on your broker's time. Please read below:

Calculate_DST - If your broker changes its GMT offset during summer and winter you must set TRUE for this parameter. If your broker always has one same GMT offset during the whole year then set FALSE. This parameter is very important  and therefore make sure  that you set it correctly. In case that you are not sure ask your broker.

We are aware that it is difficult to understand all about GMT offset and how to set it correctly. Therefore if you have any doubts then please contact us or comment below. We will be happy to help you with setting the correct GMT offset in our forex robots.

Hi,

I want to ask you why Manual_GMT_Offset for WallStreet ASIA has to be the current GMT offset of the broker and for the other two robots, WallStreet Evo and Recovery Pro for ManualGMT_Offset have to be winter GMT offset?

Andrea Lanza February 22 2017, 2:03 PM

How must I set Calculate_DST?

Thank you

Hello Andrea, Yes Alpari Ru changes its GMT offset during summer and winter. This broker summer GMT offset is +3 and the winter GMT offset is +2. You have to set Calculate_DST=true

WallStreet 2.0 Evolution Support February 22 2017, 3:37 PM

Hello Amy,

The reason of using different gmt offset is that these robots are developed in different ways. So, they work differently.

Rafael Mac February 22 2017, 6:50 PM

You wrote... Auto_GMT - When this parameters value is TRUE then the robot will try to find the correct GMT offset of your broker automatically. But if the time zone of your computer is wrong then this automatic GMT offset detection system will fail. So, all I have to do is make sure that the time zone of my computer is right, and set Auto_GMT=True.
Question... What is the correct time zone to set on my computer? Is it the same time zone as my brokers server location?

WallStreet 2.0 Evolution Support February 23 2017, 8:35 AM

Hello Rafael Mac, Thank you for the good comment! The time zone of your computer must be the time zone of your country - your local time. If it is set correctly then the robot will find your local time GMT offset and then based on the difference between your time and your broker time it will find the correct GMT offset. In any case make sure that the robot has found the correct GMT offset. You can see it on the information box on the chart where the robot is attached.

I am running WallSreet Evo2.0 and VolatilityFactor v7.1 on the same ThinkForex account. Now ThinkFx as of today is GMT+3 and WallStreet using auto offset shows this correctly. However VolatilityFactor on auto offset shows +2. Is the 1 hour difference caused by DST. So what to do, leave as is or go to manual settings?

If you do not know your broker GMT Offset then you must contact your broker and ask them. You have to ask if they have winter and summer time. If yes, then give us both GMT offset times:

- broker winter GMT offset
- broker summer GMT offset

Then we will give you the correct settings.

Hello Thomas, It seems Forex.com's GMT offset is +0 whole year. You must disable DST parameters: DST_Usage=false, Calculate_DST=false in all robots. By default Automatic GMT Detection system is enabled. If you don't see GMT 0 on the information box then disable Automatic GMT Detection and use Manual GMT. Do the following changes:

WallStreet 2.0 Evolution and WallStreet Recovery PRO:

AutoGMT_Offset=false
ManualGMT_Offset=0
DST_Usage=false

WallStreet ASIA:

Auto_GMT=false
Manual_GMT_Offset=0
Calculate_DST=false

Hi,

I use FiBO broker for WS Evo.
I use TickDataSuite2 for testing with real tick data. I set TickDataSuite at GMT+2 and DST at 'Europe'. So, this should change the real tick data to the same as FiBO servers. Could you verify this for me that I have done it correct?

Also, in the EA, I see I get different results when using Auto_GMT = True or False. I insert ManualGMT offset at 2 and DST adjustment also True. In that case I get very good results. But when AutoGMT is True the results become bad.
Could you verify for me what is the best to choose?

WallStreet 2.0 Evolution Support April 07 2017, 4:51 PM

Hi Umit,

When you do backtests you have to set AutoGMT_Offset=false always otherwise the robot will not be able to define GMT offset correctly(that's because it tests past data). You also have to set DST_Usage to true and set your broker's GMT winter time(ManualGMT_Offset=broker gmt winter time).

The robot will not have good results because you have not set correctly the settings.

Hello Sir,

My broker is forextime. And it's server time is GMT+3. For Back testing I have downloaded tick data using tick data suite. In tick data setting I have set GMT offset to +3 and DST=Europe. So that the tick history is similar to broker time. I have also set autoGMT to false. And have set Manual GMT offset to +3 in EA settings.

In my live account I see GMT =3 in the information box by default. It means it shows the crrect value. So I have no issue with live account. Everything on default settings.

But are these settings correct for back Testing ?

Hello Vinayak,
In the gmt settings you have to set the gmt offset of your broker not of your local time. Here is what we suggest you. First ask your broker to confirm you his trading servers winter and summer gmt offsets. Then contact our support team or write here and we will give you detailed instructions.
In order to make proper backtests please first update your MT4 terminal history data. After that restart the MT4 terminal and test again.

Your broker have to know if they change winter/summer time, they have to know what happens with their servers. You won't be able to use WallStreet Forex Robot 2.0 Evolution on MQL5 VPS server because they do not allow DLL imports on their servers, you have to find a VPS which allows DLL imports. As you can read in the article, if the EA has detected your broker GMT offset correctly then you don't need to set GMT manually, so first of all you have to be sure what is your broker GMT offset by contacting them and then you can set it manually if it is necessary.

Please do not hesitate to contact support team if you have other questions.

Is there a way to secure the TP and SL exact?

SecureProfit: minimum profit to be guaranteed where the position’s current profit is equal to the value of the SecureProfitTrigger parameter.
SecureProfitTrigger: the position’s current profit (in pips) which would guarantee minimum profits equal to value of the SecureProfit parameter.
